MONO EGYPT. THE FIRST COMPILATION OF FIELD RECORDINGS FROM JUJU SOUNDS. CASSETTE  PREMIERED YESTERDAY 8/5/2020 BY THE ATTIC.

The piercing sound of the mizmar and the dramatic, pounding rhythms of double-sided tabl drums create an incredibly charged atmosphere in which the distant reverberation of The Master Musicians of Joujouka can be heard right across the Sahara.”

Stunning new field recordings from Egypt”

Cyrus Moussavi / Mississippi Records

The very first release of JuJu Sounds. Mono Egypt is a collection of field recordings gathered by Luka Kumor over the last few years. It is the result of work with musicians from the Eastern Desert, Nubia, the Nile Delta, Cairo and the port cities of the Suez Canal. The compilation is a musical journey through this region at the junction of Africa and Asia, which is characterised by a surprising diversity of instruments, cultures and dialects. This album is the fruit of dozens of recording sessions conducted in private homes and gardens, on riverbanks and rooftops, at the back of bars, in the desert, and in many other unusual places.

Compilation has been released in a limited edition of 150 copies on yellow cassette. Available in Europe via bandcamp from 08/05/2020. Distribution in the USA and Japan by Mississippi Records.

The story is complemented with behind-the-scenes insights into the work on the album and the people, instruments and musical cultures encountered.
